Are you an adult who wants a nicer smile? Many of us would like straighter teeth, but don’t want the hassle of traditional braces. Invisalign is a teeth straightening system which can straighten your teeth without having to wear metal braces. This system uses clear trays to slowly move your teeth into a new position. There are no visible traces of these traces, so you continue with your normal day-to-day activities.
Your dentist will use advanced computer technology to produce images of your teeth. This 3D imaging will be completed throughout our treatment, from initial evaluation through completion. Using these images as a guide, clear aligners are produced which are custom-made for your mouth. The trays consist of thermoplastic material.
This straightening system requires you to change aligner trays every two weeks. Your teeth will slowly move into their new position over the course of about a year. If your teeth aren’t very crooked, the treatment could be as short as six months, but most people require at least a year to get their teeth completely straightened. This treatment generally takes less time than traditional braces. It is also less painful than traditional braces since the teeth move more slowly and in smaller amounts. Traditional metal braces are adjusted less frequently, so when they are adjusted it can be more painful.
You begin the process by visiting your orthodontist. During your visit, he will make molds of your teeth. These will be used to evaluate your and design a treatment plan. The orthodontist then orders the trays and they come in a complete package. Before beginning treatment, the orthodontist may have to complete some additional work.
If your mouth is too crowded for the trays to fit properly, the orthodontist may have to file down a few of your teeth. Using a chart created from your original imaging, the orthodontist will only file certain teeth so the trays fit correctly.
Depending on your situation, the orthodontist may need to add attachments to your teeth. These are small clear bumps which are first glued to the teeth and then hardened with a light. These help the aligners move some teeth more than others. Once your treatment is completed, these attachments are completely removed.
This treatment plan can correct a number of dental issues, including underbites, crossbites, overcrowding, overbites, and widely spaced teeth. The Invisalign system is a good choice for adults because it is invisible and tray changes are completed at home, with occasional visits to the orthodontist.
